DIch87 rewrite commentary

I've said this a million places but I'll say it again

This chapter was rewritten to address a few continuity issues, like:

  1. Riku and Namine's living situations on Destiny Islands
  2. how Kairi's dad didn't notice that Sora was missing for three months
  3. Kairi's genetics/hair
I'll rant more about that under the cut

Also relevant is this wonderful KHfic about Sora's parents forgetting about Sora during CoM/Days. Please read it. It's so good.

And if you missed the really good SoRiKai fic I keep mentioning, you can read it here, or read me ranting about it here

Chapter time

Now about Kairi's genetics because this is apparently the thing that means the most to me

Destiny Islands natives have brown skin. They aren't "white". Is this a headcanon borrowed from tumblr user rakatakat? Oh yeah.
But she's got a point. If Xehanort was born on Destiny Islands and he's brown, why shouldn't Sora be? Or Riku? Kairi isn't in KH canon because she was born on Radiant Garden.

"rar you don't draw them brown" WELL OKAY I CAN'T DRAW plus the only things that I've done recently that would've incorporated this headcanon is all of the manga panel recolors. "They still aren't brown" I KNOW I try but I'm not very good at colors either sighs deeply

"Riku isn't brown??" Yeah well he's a Replica and I was dumb and decided they'd all be pale nearly-actually-white. Apparently. Should he have darker skin? Yeah. But I've never imagined it being as dark as Sora's, and I definitely think him spending 6 months in Castle Oblivion contributed to him being so damn pale.

"But Kairi's brown." Yeah but not as dark as Sora because while her dad is Destiny Islands native, her mom is not. Her mom is white.

"What's this gotta do with Kairi's hair?" Well, while it's not impossible for islanders of the race I’m imagining Destiny Islands is to have red hair, it’s also not incredibly likely. It made a lot more logical sense for Kairi’s dad—the islander—to have dark hair, and for Kairi’s mom—the non-islander—to have red hair
And thus, Kairi inherits the red hair from her mom
(She also inherited her body shape from her mom, though her mom was super short and Kairi is not. She managed to get her dad's tall genes.)

"Where's Kairi's mom from?" Probably Radiant Garden. Maybe she's Radiant Garden royalty? Did they really even have royalty?? Radiant Garden royalty has always confused me because apparently in KH canon Ansem's king but Kairi's implied to be princess so does that make him?? her father?? grandfather?? is her grandmother married to him??

I just don't know

Kairi was born on Destiny Islands in my universe, though. Her mom and her dad were together for like?? five years tops. They stayed on the Islands they had Kairi probably got married, but Kairi’s mom couldn’t stand the monotony so she just up and left one day when Kairi was like three or four

I could honestly have Kairi’s mom show up again I just gotta figure out a good reason other than JUST BECAUSE.
Thooooouuuugugh I’m such a fan of her seeing Sora and picking him up by like the collar of his shirt and just being like “Kairi is this your boyfriend?? Geeze honey he looks like something the cat dragged in”
That’s honestly my favorite thought about Kairi’s mom
I mean granted she's probably too short to actually pick Sora up. Though Sora is pretty short. Hmm.

FOR EXTRA SUPER CLARIFICATION ON RIKU AND NAMINE'S LIVING SITUATIONS

Namine was living with Kairi. They shared a room.

Riku was staying with some old fisherman who left on a trip like halfway into the Truth Hurts and came back like right before Falling to Pieces started so. They literally. Do not. know each other.

“Why didn’t Riku stay with Sora??” BECAUSE PLOT REASONS

I decided that Kairi’s dad’s name is Ren. "Because Kagamine Len and L/R are interchangeable??" NO IT ACTUALLY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT laughs I did briefly consider Kaito though. I may have gone with it had Kaito not been a VOCALOID.
But really
I went through a list of Japanese names knowing I'd have to name Sora and Kairi's parents, and Ren was one of the names. It means lotus, I think. Or romance. I'm pretty sure it's meaning depended on the kanji you used.
Anyway I saw it and it was just immediately perfect for him I couldn't imagine him with another name. I couldn't. I tried.

Sora's dad is named Haruto, which means sun or sunlight if I remember correctly. I remember it had something to do with the sun.

I don't know their mom's names, unfortunately. I can't decide on Sora's mom's name. I know Kairi's mom's name isn't Japanese.

so

Will I ever actually use their names in story? Knowing my track record, probably not. But I have the option to do so should I need to.

I remember reading through this and I saw that Kairi's dad's voice squeaked when he was upset and I got really really really happy
Because Kairi's voice squeaks when she's upset and

Destiny Islands natives forgetting people when they leave the Islands isn't anywhere near KH canon but I needed some form of reason.
So, in FtPverse, there is some form of spell on that Island that makes people forget. Whether or not I'll get around to having Kairi's dad call Merlin or someone out there to look at in-story is a mystery, but don't count on it.

"People with strong ties don't forget, so why did Kairi at the beginning of Dead Inside?" Because she kind of wanted to. She didn't entirely want to remember what happened in Falling to Pieces she was a little shellshocked and the spell was easily able to blur the memories in her head.
Plus, I mean, Kairi's dad forgot Sora too. Or, he didn't forget Sora, but he just kept going "eh I'm sure he's fine even though I haven't seen him in three months and I should be worried", and I'm sure something similar happened to Kairi

"Namine doesn't have strong ties to Sora but she remembered him??" She's Namine.
And if you don't want the vague reason canon gives you concerning everything about Namine
You can say because of her connection to Riku she remembered Sora because Riku didn't forget Sora so she couldn't. Y'know.

There's a high chance that if you weren't born on Destiny Islands it's easier for the island natives to forget you. That would explain why literally no one really remembers Kairi's mother (besides her father) and explain why Kairi's dad forgot Riku and Namine within weeks of them leaving
And why everyone else completely forgot about Riku and Namine
Not that Riku and Namine really had strong ties to anyone

Yeah

That's it
